> Local voters in 10 states turned down nearly every data center proposal, feeding fears that the AI infrastructure buildout will slow.

Voters in 10 states rejected data center projects in 40 of 41 local ballot measures, according to Ballotpedia and CNBC. The results landed as investors were already worried about heavy AI capital spending, rising interest rates and a Democratic sweep in Congress.

The Nasdaq fell 5.5% on Thursday, its worst day since April 2025. Nvidia and Qualcomm each dropped more than 9%, and Nvidia lost almost $450 billion in market value. AMD, Micron and Applied Materials fell by double digits, while Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta slipped 2% to 4%.

Meta's president said building data centers will be harder after the election. Qualcomm reported about $650 million in data center revenue for the quarter, but its forecast disappointed, and a global memory shortage is pushing up component and device prices.
