> Ford says it won't sell driving data to brokers or use it for targeted ads, and has published a site explaining what its cars collect.

Ford has unveiled a "privacy promise", an explicit commitment to keep customers' vehicle data safe and let them control what they share. A new website explains what data its cars collect, how it is used, where it goes and how owners can opt in or out. Chief Privacy Officer Kristin Jones said Ford does not share information about how customers drive with data brokers.

Ford says it does not aim to monetize the data and does not use it for targeted advertising. Vehicle health data powers maintenance alerts and R&D. The trade-off: switching off connected services also disables real-time navigation and built-in roadside assistance. The move comes ahead of new connected vehicles, including those on its upcoming universal electric vehicle platform.

The pressure is real. Polling cited by TechCrunch finds only 14% of U.S. customers fully understand what data their vehicle collects, while Ford's own survey of 1,000 consumers found 91% call data privacy a key purchase factor. GM recently agreed to a $220 million settlement with 36 states after an FTC action over selling driver data, and EV startup Slate Auto is also marketing privacy ahead of its launch.
