The 38% SDF solution was applied at six-month intervals, with no drilling, injections or sedation.\n\nThe study, led by Margherita Fontana of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry with NYU's Amr Moursi as co-principal investigator, enrolled 830 children under 6 through dental clinics, pediatric practices and Head Start programs in Michigan, New York and Iowa. It began in 2018 and received more than $12 million from the NIH's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.\n\nThe FDA cleared SDF in 2014 for tooth sensitivity, and dentists already use it off-label on cavities; the trial data is meant to support approval for arresting decay. The main drawback is that SDF permanently darkens the treated decay, which can be visible on front teeth. It does not suit every cavity, and arrested decay may still need dental work later."}}
