> A judge ordered Meta to pay New Mexico $25 billion after a jury found it misled Facebook users about privacy; Meta will appeal.

A New Mexico judge has ordered Meta to pay the state $25 billion for deceiving Facebook users about privacy, the largest fine ever imposed on the company. District Judge Francis Mathew issued the ruling on Wednesday, following a jury finding last month of more than 43 million violations of New Mexico's consumer protection laws.

Jurors found that 26 of 29 statements by Meta and its leadership about privacy and content moderation were misleading. Attorney General Raúl Torrez said all of the money will go to a fund for the state's education system.

Meta plans to appeal, which could reduce the final payment. Chief legal officer CJ Mahoney said the company is confident it will prevail.
