# Amazon Launches TorchNeuron to Run PyTorch Apps on Trainium Chips, Challenging Nvidia's CUDA Lock-In

> AWS says PyTorch apps can move to its Trainium chips with a one-line configuration change and no code rewrite.

Amazon Web Services released TorchNeuron on Monday, a tool that lets AI applications written in PyTorch run on Amazon's Trainium chips. AWS says moving an app takes a one-line configuration change and no code rewrite. Amazon also plans to contribute changes upstream to PyTorch to make the framework less tied to specific chips.

Amazon says about 85% of AI apps are written with PyTorch. Nvidia's CUDA software has made its hardware the default choice for them, and TorchNeuron targets that advantage directly. Voice AI firm Deepgram, which moved to Trainium, reports processing 70% more audio per dollar at production-grade accuracy.

PyTorch apps can already be ported to AMD GPUs and Apple chips, so Amazon is not the first. AWS VP Colin Brace framed the goal as removing the lock-in that left developers without a real choice. Whether it adds choice or configuration headaches remains to be seen.
