> The prize honors the discovery of light-gated ion channels, the basis of optogenetics, which lets researchers switch specific nerve cells on and off with light.

Karl Deisseroth of Stanford University, Peter Hegemann of Humboldt University in Berlin and Georg Nagel of the University of Würzburg share the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, each receiving one third. The Nobel Foundation cites their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.

Optogenetics uses light to control cells, especially nerve cells, that have been made light-sensitive. It lets researchers test how specific cell types influence behavior and other body functions, and has become a standard tool in brain research.

Deisseroth is 54, Hegemann 71 and Nagel 73. The prize was announced on October 5, 2026, opening this year's Nobel week.
