> The Swedish Academy honors Anne Carson for a bold, inventive body of work in playful dialogue with the classical tradition.

The Swedish Academy awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson on Oct. 8. The citation honors her "bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition," creates new forms for contemporary literature.

Carson, 76, was born in Toronto and has held Icelandic citizenship since 2022. She is known for the verse novel "Autobiography of Red" (1998) and the 2019 performance piece "Norma Jeane Baker of Troy," which blends Euripides' "Helen" with the story of Marilyn Monroe. Her translations of classical Greek literature, libretti and criticism also drew the Academy's praise.

The prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million). Last year's laureate was Laszlo Krasznahorkai.
