A jury found the company violated the state's Unfair Practices Act more than 43 million times, based on deceptive statements about hate speech policies and data privacy made after the Cambridge Analytica leak.\n\nThe law allows up to $5,000 per violation, a theoretical maximum of about $219 billion. State lawyer Randi McGinn urged the court to apply the maximum rate but cap the total, citing due process concerns. Meta argued that an award in the tens of billions would be unconstitutional, and reportedly asked for a limit of $3.45 billion.\n\nJudge Francis Mathew has not yet ruled on the amount. The outcome could set a benchmark for state-level penalties against large tech platforms."}}
