> The Pentagon says hackers stole unencrypted records of about 2.8 million living people and 300,000 deceased individuals over nine months.

The Department of Defense says hackers exploited a vulnerability in a file-sharing system at the Defense Manpower Data Center and stole unencrypted personnel records. The breach ran from October 2025 to mid-July 2026.

About 2.8 million living people are affected, plus nearly 300,000 deceased individuals. The data includes Social Security numbers, names, dates of birth, sex, race and military service information. The US military has roughly 1.3 million active service members.

The Pentagon says it has "no indication that the information was misused" but gave no details on how it reached that conclusion, and the attacker has not been identified. The incident echoes the 2015 OPM breach, which hit more than 22 million government employees.
