> Crusoe has cancelled its $1.25 billion deal to buy Boom Supersonic turbines for its AI data centers, saying turbines no longer fit its near-term power plans at Abilene.

AI data center builder Crusoe has walked away from a $1.25 billion agreement to buy 29 natural-gas turbines from Boom Supersonic for its power-hungry sites, Boom CEO Blake Scholl confirmed. The turbines were meant to help power Crusoe's massive Abilene, Texas campus, which supplies computing capacity to OpenAI.

Scholl said "turbines are no longer part of Crusoe's near-term primary power mix at Abilene," so a launch partnership "just didn't make sense." Crusoe said it builds its AI factories 'from the power up,' choosing whichever mix of turbines, wind, solar, batteries and grid power fits each site as needs evolve. The reversal comes shortly after Crusoe closed a $3.9 billion Series F and stepped back from a planned Wyoming AI campus, pointing to a shift toward modular facilities and cloud services over fixed gigawatt-scale power commitments.

Boom's Superpower turbine shares about 80% of its parts with Symphony, the engine for Boom's supersonic Overture jet. Despite losing Crusoe, Boom says other customers remain in its pipeline: it plans to deliver roughly 250 megawatts of Superpower turbines next year and is targeting 1 gigawatt by 2028.
