The group set up camp at 8,400 feet on August 29 and began their summit push at 3 a.m. the next day, expecting an eight-hour round trip.\n\nGemini had advised them to pack far less food and water than the climb actually required. The hikers reached the summit around 7 p.m., long past the safe noon turnaround time, and got lost descending in the dark, wandering off the Clear Creek Route into Mud Creek Canyon. One of them fell and injured his knee, forcing the group to shelter overnight until U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers found them the next morning.\n\nAll three were treated for their injuries and walked out safely with help from Siskiyou County Search and Rescue. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office urged hikers to never rely solely on AI for trip planning, recommending instead that climbers check with local ranger stations, carry backup navigation and communication gear, and turn back at noon if they haven't reached the summit."}}
