The ultimatum expired on September 4, and the leak followed within hours.\n\nHackers first breached Berlin's state network between August 7 and 12, forcing authorities to shut down several government systems on August 14 while investigators assessed the damage. The outage halted housing-benefit applications and disrupted the city's transport and environment departments for days. The published dataset, roughly 1.4 million files, reportedly includes personnel records, banking codes, thousands of contracts, and sensitive CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) emergency plans, along with personal data on more than 12,000 individuals.\n\n\"The State of Berlin will not give in to blackmail. The safety of the State of Berlin's staff and the people of Berlin is our top priority,\" said Florian Hauer, Berlin's Chief Digital Officer. State police, prosecutors, and federal security agencies are now investigating the breach, which stands as one of the largest ransomware attacks on a European government institution to date."}}
