> OpenAI now lets clinicians link Epic's 325-million-patient EHR system to ChatGPT Health for read-only, AI-assisted chart review.

OpenAI announced on September 1 that healthcare organizations can now connect their Epic electronic health record systems to ChatGPT Health, letting clinicians query a patient's authorized chart instead of digging through appointment notes, lab results, medications, and specialist documentation by hand. In some deployments, ChatGPT is embedded directly inside the EHR layout so doctors can use it without leaving the patient's record.

Access is strictly read-only — the AI cannot write anything back to the chart. Epic's system holds records for more than 325 million patients, and UCSF Health is serving as an early pilot partner. Alongside the Epic integration, OpenAI launched a Healthcare Public Data plugin that links ChatGPT to sources including PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, and DailyMed, so clinicians can check trial eligibility, medication identifiers, and coverage policies in the same workspace.

OpenAI says it tested the system by collecting 4,300 physician responses across 27 clinical use cases, finding 99.1% were judged safe — though it acknowledges that even rare unsafe answers in a medical setting can cause real harm, underscoring why the rollout keeps AI access read-only for now.
