> Waymo launched driverless rides in Denver, San Diego and Tampa while Zoox begins testing in Houston, as the two companies race to expand robotaxi coverage across the U.S.

Waymo and Amazon-owned Zoox both announced robotaxi expansions on September 1, pushing the driverless ride-hailing race into new U.S. cities. Waymo opened driverless rides in Denver, San Diego and Tampa, bringing its footprint to 14 U.S. cities and marking its first commercial operations in Colorado.

Waymo's fleet now tops 4,000 vehicles, including roughly 300 units of its new sixth-generation Ojai minivan, which will run exclusively in Denver and San Diego. The company completes over 500,000 paid rides per week and is targeting one million weekly rides by the end of 2026. Zoox, meanwhile, said it will begin testing in Houston and San Diego with retrofitted mapping vehicles ahead of deploying its purpose-built driverless robotaxis, extending its presence to 12 U.S. locations.

The dueling announcements underscore how fast the robotaxi market is scaling. Goldman Sachs Research projects the U.S. market will grow from roughly $3 billion next year to $19 billion by 2030 and $48 billion by 2035, as Alphabet and Amazon race to lock down territory ahead of competitors.
