# Glacier Collapse Triggers Deadly Floods on Nepal-Tibet Border, Over 1,500 Missing

> A Himalayan glacier collapse unleashed flash floods on the Nepal-Tibet border, killing over 390 people and leaving more than 1,500 missing, with officials warning a new debris lake could trigger further flooding.

A section of glacier collapsed at roughly 5,200 meters elevation in the Himalayas on Wednesday, plunging about 1,200 meters and slamming into the Lhende River. The impact temporarily dammed the river before the debris blockage gave way, sending a wall of water and rock downstream into Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts, and across the border into Tibet's Gyirong County.

More than 390 people are confirmed dead, including 389 in Nepal and 3 in Tibet, while over 1,500 remain missing across both countries. Among the missing are 668 tourists from 34 countries in Nepal and 260 foreign nationals in Tibet. Floodwaters continued downstream through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers into India's Bihar state. A 4.4 magnitude seismic signal initially blamed on an earthquake was later confirmed by the USGS to have come from the landslide itself.

A new lake has since formed from debris damming the river at the collapse site, and officials in Nepal's Rasuwa district have warned it is beginning to overflow, raising the risk of a second flood as rescue teams search for survivors.
