# Meta Closes Privacy Loophole That Let Ray-Ban Smart Glasses Record With Light Covered

> Meta is patching its Ray-Ban and Meta Smart Glasses so the camera stops recording the instant the privacy LED is covered mid-session.

Meta is rolling out a software update that closes a privacy loophole in its Ray-Ban and Meta Smart Glasses lines. Previously, a wearer could start a recording and then cover the small LED capture light mid-session, letting the camera keep filming while the visible "recording" indicator stayed dark to anyone nearby.

Alex Himel, Meta's VP of AR, said the camera will now stop working the instant the light is covered during an active recording, not just before one starts. Meta had already addressed hardware tricks used to physically disable the LED; this update targets the simpler workaround of just blocking it with a finger or tape once filming was underway.

Meta says only a small minority of users attempted the workaround, but covert recording with camera-equipped glasses has drawn growing privacy concern as the devices spread. The company says further updates hardening the recording indicator will continue to roll out.
