The deal is expected to close in September 2026, after which DuckLabs' engineering team — including co-founders and DuckDB creators Hannes Muhleisen and Mark Raasveldt — will join AWS while remaining based in Amsterdam.\n\nDuckDB is an embeddable, in-process analytics database often compared to SQLite for its ability to run complex queries directly inside applications without separate server infrastructure. At its peak, the project has seen more than 3 million downloads per day. AWS and DuckLabs have already collaborated since early 2025 on projects like Amazon S3 Tables and SageMaker Lakehouse support.\n\nAWS says DuckDB itself will remain free and open source under the MIT license, governed independently by the DuckDB Foundation. \"AWS brings the scale and reach to introduce this technology to many more users,\" said DuckLabs co-founder Hannes Muhleisen. The acquisition fits Amazon's broader push to turn S3 into a place where customers analyze data, not just store it. Financial terms were not disclosed."}}
