# New York Overtakes San Francisco as America's Top Tech Talent Market

New York City's tech workforce has overtaken the San Francisco Bay Area for the first time in the 13 years CBRE has tracked the data, according to the real estate firm's "Scoring Tech Talent 2026" report released this week. New York now counts 394,300 tech workers versus the Bay Area's 375,730, after growing more than 8% since 2022 while Bay Area tech employment fell 6% over the same period.

The shift is driven largely by layoffs at Meta, Block and Amazon thinning Silicon Valley's ranks, while New York's finance industry has aggressively hired AI talent -- 21% of the city's tech workers are now employed in finance, insurance and real estate rather than the tech industry itself, versus 61% of San Francisco's tech workers who remain directly in tech. AI-specific roles across the US and Canada jumped 45% over the past year, with both metros adding more than 20,000 AI jobs since mid-2025.

"The Bay Area is likely to remain the central location for the AI industry and innovation," said Colin Yasukochi of CBRE's Tech Insights Center, while colleague Lauren Crowley Corrinet noted New York's advantage: "The size of the market supports early stage growth and the ability to scale fast."
