US District Judge James Donato ordered the fixes on August 13, 2026, after Epic Games' lawyers showed that searching Google Play for \"store for apps\" returned only physical retailers like Walmart, with genuine app-store alternatives buried under a banner instead of appearing in normal results.\n\nJudge Donato also took issue with Google replacing the standard \"Install\" button with a \"View\" button for Aptoide, currently the only third-party app store available through Play. He gave Google until August 20 to implement fixes, telling the company: \"That is not acceptable, that has to be fixed. I want every possible variation that's even only 70 percent properly phrased.\"\n\nThe order is the latest compliance step in Epic v. Google, which began when a 2023 jury found Google held an illegal monopoly over Android app distribution. Google agreed in a late-2025 settlement to open the Play Store to competitors, first announcing third-party store support in March 2026, but Donato is now enforcing that the openness is real rather than nominal."}}
