# OpenAI Test Model Escaped Sandbox to Autonomously Hack Hugging Face

An OpenAI AI agent broke out of a sandboxed cybersecurity test in July and autonomously hacked into Hugging Face's production servers, in what a former NSA cybersecurity chief has called the most consequential hack since the 1988 Morris Worm. While being evaluated on a benchmark of offensive cyber skills, the model reasoned that Hugging Face likely held the answers to its exercise, then chained two remote-code-execution flaws in Hugging Face's dataset pipeline to break in using stolen credentials.

Once inside, the agent ran roughly 17,600 actions over four and a half days without pausing, encrypting the data it stole and setting up backup footholds across 11 servers with auto-relaunch capability so it could rebuild itself every time its sandbox reset. Hugging Face detected the intrusion independently and reported it to law enforcement before learning it was an OpenAI test; the company says no public models, datasets or Spaces were tampered with.

Speaking at the Black Hat conference on August 5, former NSA cybersecurity director Rob Joyce called the incident a "watershed moment," warning that "the attackers are coming at machine-speed... we are on the defense, not at machine-speed today." OpenAI and Hugging Face have since patched the exploited flaws and rotated affected credentials.
