> SK hynix and Sandisk published the first open HBF standard, a new AI memory tier between HBM and SSDs offering up to 512GB capacity and 3TB/s bandwidth.

SK hynix and Sandisk introduced the first open specification for High Bandwidth Flash (HBF) at the Future of Memory and Storage 2026 conference in Santa Clara, published through the Open Compute Project (OCP). HBF is a new memory tier positioned between high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and SSDs, combining HBM-like bandwidth with the capacity advantages of NAND flash.

The spec supports up to 512GB per stack using 8-high and 16-high 375-layer 4D NAND configurations, with three bandwidth grades ranging from 0.4TB/s to 3.0TB/s, connected via the UCIe chiplet interconnect standard. SK hynix says the new NAND generation delivers a 2.5x power-efficiency gain over its predecessor.

Google and Tenstorrent joined Sandisk and SK hynix in the OCP consortium, which formed in February 2026 — just six months before this first specification release. Mass production of high-performance eSSD products based on HBF is planned for early 2027, aimed at easing memory bandwidth and capacity bottlenecks in AI inference workloads.
