# German Engineers Set Record With Hydrogen Turbine That Skips the Compressor Entirely

> KIT researchers ran a hydrogen turbine with no mechanical compressor for a record 303 seconds, using detonation waves to generate pressure and cutting the roughly 50% power loss conventional turbines spend on compression.

Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), led by Professor Daniel Banuti of the Institute of Thermal Energy Technology and Safety, ran a compressorless hydrogen gas turbine for 303 seconds, beating NASA's previous record of 250 seconds and marking the first time electricity has been generated this way.

Conventional gas turbines burn roughly half their output just compressing air before ignition. The KIT design skips that step entirely: hydrogen's fast reaction speed lets detonation waves inside the combustion chamber generate the needed pressure themselves, through a process called pressure-gain combustion, with no mechanical compressor at all.

Fewer moving parts and no compression losses point toward turbines that are simpler to build and significantly more efficient. The team's next goal is extending runtime further and scaling the approach toward practical power generation.
