# Google Pulls AI Image Tool From Google Earth One Day After Launch Over Misinformation Fears

> Google pulled its Nano Banana AI image-generation tool from Google Earth just one day after launch after it was used to fabricate fake blast craters and protest scenes.

Google rolled back its Nano Banana 2 AI image-generation feature from Google Earth on July 31, just one day after launch, after users showed it could fabricate convincing satellite imagery. Examples included a fake blast crater superimposed on Los Angeles and invented protesters outside Google's Mountain View campus.

Google said screenshots of the generated imagery appeared to violate its policies, and that while geospatial professionals found the tool useful, misuse spread faster than safeguards could catch it. The company had initially defended the feature by pointing to its SynthID watermark and urged users to verify images via Gemini or Google Lens — a defense critics called naive, since most people never verify images before sharing them.

Google Earth is widely used by journalists, researchers and open-source investigators to geolocate conflict footage and corroborate real-world events, making the line between recorded and synthetic imagery especially high-stakes there. Google says it will bring the feature back only once stronger guardrails are in place.
