> A Munich court ruled AI music generator Suno broke copyright law by training on GEMA-protected songs, ordering it to disclose infringement revenue.

The Munich Regional Court ruled that AI music startup Suno breached both US and German copyright law by training its models on more than 2 million scraped songs without permission from GEMA, Germany's music licensing society. Judges found Suno's system had memorized and reproduced recognizable melodies, harmonies and rhythms from six protected tracks, including "Forever Young," "Mambo No. 5" and "Daddy Cool."

Suno, valued at roughly $5.4 billion earlier this year, must now disclose all revenue tied to the infringing works so damages can be calculated, and is barred from further reproducing or training on GEMA's catalog. GEMA CEO Dr. Tobias Holzmüller said AI models built on stolen intellectual property have no protection under the law. Suno says it disagrees with the ruling and is considering an appeal.

The decision is Europe's first binding court verdict on AI-generated music copyright and GEMA's second win against a major AI company, after a similar case against OpenAI in November 2025. Similar litigation against rival Udio is still pending.
