> OpenAI's new program gives 10,000 researchers this summer, and 100,000 through 2027, free access to GPT-5.6 Sol Pro and other frontier tools.

OpenAI launched "ChatGPT for Academic Researchers" on July 29, giving scientists, mathematicians and engineers at qualifying universities free access to its frontier AI tools. The rollout starts with 10,000 researchers this summer at institutions including the Institute for Advanced Study and the École normale supérieure, expanding to 100,000 through 2027.

Participants get 12 months of complimentary access to a dedicated ChatGPT workspace, including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, ChatGPT Work and Codex, and can invite up to four collaborators from their institution. The workspace also unlocks over 75 life-science skills covering genomics, protein modeling and drug discovery, plus connectors to scientific literature and clinical databases. OpenAI says research data is not used to train its models by default.

The program is part of a pledge of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research, alongside OpenAI's $50 million NextGenAI initiative and its work with the US Department of Energy's Genesis Mission to bring frontier AI to national labs and universities.
