The system will fill roughly 100 stainless-steel cabinets cooled by liquid helium to 2 Kelvin (-456°F), housing chips that route thousands of photons through optical switches and beam splitters. The chips are fabricated by GlobalFoundries in Malta, New York, using a custom barium titanate material.\n\nThe company has raised over $1 billion, including a $100 million CHIPS Act commitment from the US Department of Commerce, and is already testing three connected cabinets with 250 chips each at its Milpitas facility. It is targeting roughly 1 million qubits at industrial scale, with an Australian site expected to have its cooling infrastructure operational by the end of 2027. DARPA, which has evaluated the project since 2023, has grown \"more optimistic\" that a utility-scale quantum computer could arrive by 2033.\n\nPartners including Lockheed Martin, Mercedes and Airbus are eyeing applications such as drug design — PsiQuantum says a full-scale machine could simulate a key drug-metabolizing enzyme in four minutes, a calculation that takes over a decade today — plus battery design and quantum chemistry."}}
