A white, medium-to-large Swiss shepherd descended from North American white German Shepherd lines. It is gentle, attentive and eager to work with its people.

## Overview

The White Swiss Shepherd Dog is a white herding breed from Switzerland, with erect ears and either a medium-length or long coat. It is closely related to the German Shepherd and shares much of its working ability.

It is intelligent, sensitive and people-focused, and suits active owners who want a trainable companion and enjoy activities together.

## History

White German Shepherds were once refused registration in Germany, but in North America the colour stayed popular and the White Shepherd developed as its own breed. From the early 1970s, dogs of this type were brought from the United States and Canada to Switzerland, starting with a dog named Lobo, born in 1966.

Switzerland recognised the breed in 1991. The FCI accepted it provisionally in 2002 and definitively in 2011, and the British Kennel Club followed in 2017.

## Appearance

A medium to large, well-proportioned dog, about 53 to 66 cm at the withers and 25 to 40 kg. The coat is always white, in medium or long length, ideally over dark skin. Eyes are almond-shaped and light to dark brown, and the triangular ears stand erect and point forward.

## Temperament

The White Swiss Shepherd is typically gentle, loyal and keen to please, often a little reserved with strangers. It is sensitive and responds best to calm, fair handling. It wants company and tends to be unhappy if left alone for long periods.

## Care and exercise

Daily exercise and mental work are important, such as long walks, obedience, agility or herding-style games. Early socialisation helps it grow into a confident adult. Brushing a few times a week keeps the white coat tidy, with more during heavy seasonal shedding.

## Health

Generally a sturdy breed, but like other large shepherd types it can be prone to hip and elbow problems. Reputable breeders health-test their breeding dogs.
