The Wetterhoun is a curly-coated Frisian water dog bred to hunt otter and polecat and to retrieve waterfowl. It is a reserved, determined and sensitive family guardian.

## Overview

The Wetterhoun comes from the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. It was bred for tough water work, hunting otter and polecat, retrieving waterfowl and watching the farm.

It is reserved with strangers but devoted to its family, and it needs early training and gentle handling.

## History

The first Wetterhouns lived at least 400 years ago in Friesland. They probably came from Romani dogs crossed with local Frisian dogs, perhaps the extinct Old Water Dog.

The breed almost disappeared during the Second World War but careful breeding by fanciers brought it back. The FCI lists it with the water dogs in Group 8.

## Appearance

A sturdy medium to large dog of 55 to 59 cm and 25 to 35 kg. The thick, oily, water-repellent coat is curly on the body and smoother on head, ears and legs. Ears hang flat and the tail curls over the back. The eyes give a slightly stern look.

## Temperament

The Wetterhoun is a natural guardian, reserved with strangers yet never aggressive. It is strong-willed but not stubborn, and it will stay on a task until it is done. It is sensitive and must never be trained harshly. With good socialisation it is very tolerant, even with children.

## Care and exercise

This working dog needs plenty of exercise, especially swimming, and a job or activity to keep its mind busy. Start training and socialisation early with kind, consistent methods. Brush the coat regularly but avoid over-grooming, since the natural oils protect it.
