It is the most popular hound in competition coon hunts, known for speed, intelligence and a clear voice.\n\nAway from the hunt it is a mellow, people-loving dog, but it needs plenty of exercise and a purpose, and it does best with active owners who understand hounds.","history":"The breed grew from English and American Foxhounds in the 1800s. Kentucky breeders John W. Walker and George Washington Maupin are credited with its early development, and a stolen black and tan dog called Tennessee Lead, crossed in around 1852, shaped the line.\n\nIt was first listed by the United Kennel Club in 1905 as part of the English Coonhound, became a separate breed in 1945, and joined the American Kennel Club in 2012.","appearance":"A medium-large, racy hound with a broad skull, long muzzle, dark soft eyes and long hanging ears. Height can range from about 51 to 69 cm, and typical weight is 23 to 32 kg, with males bigger than females.\n\nThe smooth, glossy coat is most often tricolour, white with black and tan markings. Black and white or tan and white bicolours are also accepted.","personality":"Loving, confident and intelligent, the Treeing Walker enjoys human company and usually gets on well with children and other dogs. Indoors it is mellow and likes comfort; on a scent it becomes tireless and intense.\n\nIt is vocal, with a clear bay that changes to a steady chop at the tree. With training it can live alongside cats, though its hunting instincts remain strong.","care":"This is a working hound and needs plenty of daily exercise, ideally running or scent work in a safe area. It should be on a lead or in secure fencing, as it will follow its nose.\n\nThe short coat needs only occasional brushing. Check and clean the long ears regularly, and give training and mental work so the dog does not become bored or noisy.","health":"Generally a hardy, healthy hound with a typical lifespan of 12 to 13 years. As with other long-eared hounds, ears need regular checking, and hunting dogs can pick up cuts and injuries in the field."},"recognition":{"fci_number":null,"fci_standard_url":null,"akc_url":"https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/treeing-walker-coonhound/"},"sources":{"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treeing_Walker_Coonhound","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q39244","wikipedia_revision":1364426938},"profile":{"written_by":"AI model (Claude Sonnet) from the sources above","written_at":"2026-10-15T13:37:30Z"}}}
