The Toy Manchester Terrier is a miniature, sleek black-and-tan terrier of up to about 5.4 kg, bred down in North America from the Manchester Terrier as a lively and affectionate companion.

## Overview

The Toy Manchester Terrier is a small, long-legged dog with a smooth black coat marked with tan, a long tail and upright ears. It follows the Manchester Terrier standard in colour and shape, but is limited in weight.

It is placed in the Toy Group by the American and Canadian kennel clubs. The FCI and The Kennel Club do not recognise a Toy variety of the Manchester Terrier.

## History

The Manchester Terrier was developed in nineteenth-century England from the old Black and Tan Terrier crossed with the Whippet and other breeds, mainly for catching rats. The Toy was produced by breeding that dog down in size in North America.

In the 1920s it was known as the Toy Black and Tan Terrier, and the name changed in the 1930s. The AKC recognised it in 1938, but numbers fell, and in 1958 it became a size division of the Manchester Terrier. Genetic work links it closely with the Miniature Pinscher.

## Appearance

A small, elegant dog with a short, glossy coat in black with tan markings. The weight must not exceed 5.4 kg. The ears stand erect, wide at the base and pointed at the tip, and cropped ears are a disqualification in the show ring.

Flaring bell ears are considered a serious fault in the show ring, though they do not affect the dog as a companion.

## Temperament

Lively, alert and attached to its people, the Toy Manchester keeps the terrier's spirit in a tiny body. It enjoys play and closeness with its family, and it is quick to notice anything unusual. Gentle handling and early socialisation help it stay confident and well mannered.

## Care and exercise

Daily walks and play sessions are enough to keep this little terrier content, and it still enjoys chasing small moving things, so a secure lead or garden is wise. Its short coat needs only a quick wipe or brush. It feels the cold, so a coat in winter is helpful.

## Health

A 2024 UK study found a life expectancy of 13 years for the breed, a little better than the average for purebreds.
