A shaggier, lighter and longer-legged relative of the Tibetan Mastiff, the Kyi Apso is an ancient Himalayan livestock guardian with a bearded face and a bouncy trot.

## Overview

The Tibetan Kyi Apso is a medium to large guardian dog from the Tibetan Plateau, closely related to the Tibetan Mastiff but leaner and more rugged-looking. It is an old and rare population, still little known outside its homeland.

It is independent, watchful and strongly protective. This is a dog for experienced owners who understand guardian breeds and can offer space and firm, patient leadership.

## History

The Kyi Apso has lived on the Tibetan Plateau around Mount Kailash since antiquity, guarding flocks from predators and protecting homes and settlements. It is thought to have split from the Tibetan Mastiff as a bearded variety. Its fine undercoat was even gathered to weave small carpets.

The West first saw one in a photograph from 1937, a dog owned by the 13th Dalai Lama. A few animals reached the United States in the 1990s, where a breed club was formed.

## Appearance

Compared with the Tibetan Mastiff the Kyi Apso is lighter and shaggier, with a bearded muzzle, no heavy dewlaps or facial wrinkles, long hairy ears, longer legs and a more slender body. The tail curls fully over the back.

It stands about 63 to 71 cm and weighs roughly 32 to 41 kg. Its trot is distinctive, rolling and bouncy, and its bark is deep and resonant.

## Temperament

Independent, highly intelligent and alert, the Kyi Apso is also stubborn and territorial. It is naturally wary of strangers and will confront intruders, which makes it an effective guardian but a demanding household dog.

Early socialisation and consistent, calm handling are essential. It bonds closely with its own family.

## Care and exercise

This is an athletic, energetic dog that needs room, a sturdy fence and daily activity. It is not suited to small flats, and its deep bark may bother close neighbours.

The long double coat needs regular brushing, especially during the seasonal shed. Mental stimulation and early training help channel its guarding instincts.

## Health

Little formal health data exists for this rare dog. Like other large guardian types it benefits from sensible weight control and attention to joint health.
