The Thai Bangkaew Dog is a medium-sized spitz from a village in central Thailand, descended from a monastery dog and a wild dog. It is loyal, watchful and a natural guardian.

## Overview

The Thai Bangkaew is a medium-sized spitz-type dog from Thailand, named after the village of Bangkaew in Phitsanulok Province.

It is a devoted family dog and a capable watchdog, with a thick coat and a strong bond to its people.

## History

The breed began in the village of Bangkaew, near the Yom River. A black and white female dog belonging to a Buddhist abbot was mated with a wild dog that has since died out, producing the first dogs of the breed.

Since 1957 the villagers have carried out selective breeding, starting from single litters, and this gave rise to today's breed.

## Appearance

A sturdy, well-balanced spitz with a full ruff around the neck, a bushy tail curled over the back, and a pointed muzzle. Males are usually a little over 45 cm tall, with females a little shorter.

The coat is thick and the build is strong yet agile.

## Temperament

The Bangkaew is loyal and attached to its family, but reserved with strangers and protective of its home. It can be dominant with other dogs, so early socialisation is important.

It is intelligent and learns well from a calm, confident owner.

## Care and exercise

Give it daily walks and play, and early, steady training. It is best suited to a home with a secure garden and an owner with some dog experience.

Brush weekly, and more often when it sheds heavily.
