## Overview

The Sussex Spaniel is a low, compact gun dog from the English county of Sussex. It has a slow, steady pace, a calm manner and a touch of clownish humour, and it loves to be near its people.

It is a rare breed that is best known for its golden-liver coat and its habit of giving tongue on a scent.

## History

The breed was developed in Sussex in the late 1700s, with early kennels at Goodwood and Rolvenden. It was meant to work in thick undergrowth and to give voice so the hunter could follow it.

It was among the first breeds registered by the UK Kennel Club in 1872 and was admitted to the American Kennel Club stud book in 1884. It nearly vanished during the Second World War, and breeder Joy Freer saved it. In 2009 a Sussex named Stump won Best in Show at Westminster.

## Appearance

This is a low, rectangular, strongly built spaniel standing 38 to 41 cm and weighing 20 to 23 kg. It resembles the Clumber Spaniel but is smaller and differently coloured.

The thick coat is rich golden liver, sometimes slightly wavy, with feathering on the chest, legs and ears. The eyes are hazel and the ears are long, silky and set low.

## Temperament

Sussex Spaniels are calm, affectionate and eager to be with people. They are excellent with children, can be protective of their family and make good therapy dogs. They can be stubborn in training but have a natural ability to quarter ground and retrieve.

## Care and exercise

They need steady daily walks and time to sniff and explore, but are not demanding athletes. Brush the coat regularly and check and clean the ears often. Keep them lean to protect the back.

## Health

Hip dysplasia occurs, and long ears make otitis externa common. Intervertebral disc disease can affect the back, and heart conditions such as pulmonary stenosis and patent ductus arteriosus are known. Whelping can be difficult and sometimes needs a caesarean.
