The Standard Schnauzer is the original medium-sized Schnauzer, a robust, square-built German farm dog with a wiry coat, bushy beard and eyebrows, and a keen ratter's spirit.

## Overview

The Standard Schnauzer is the middle one of the three Schnauzer breeds, sitting between the Miniature and the Giant. It is a sturdy, alert all-rounder that has worked as a farm and stable dog.

Today it is mostly a family companion, valued for its loyalty, intelligence and lively character.

## History

The breed comes from southern Germany and shares its roots with the German Pinscher. Rough-haired dogs of this type guarded carriages and stables and kept rats in check, and could appear in the same litters as smooth-haired Pinschers.

The name Schnauzer was officially adopted in 1917, and the FCI accepted the breed in 1955. In Germany it is now considered endangered, with only a few hundred puppies registered each year.

## Appearance

A robust, squarely built medium-sized dog standing 45 to 50 cm at the withers and weighing roughly 14 to 24 kg. It has a rectangular head with a bristly beard, bushy eyebrows and high-set V-shaped ears.

The hard, wiry coat covers a soft undercoat and comes in salt-and-pepper or black.

## Temperament

Standard Schnauzers are alert, devoted and clever, with plenty of spirit. They tend to be reserved with strangers and make attentive watchdogs.

They are bright and learn quickly, but need consistent, positive training and early socialisation. Their ratting heritage means they may chase small animals.

## Care and exercise

They need daily exercise and plenty of mental stimulation, and enjoy dog sports, long walks and games with their family. A bored Schnauzer can become noisy or destructive.

The wiry coat needs regular brushing and is traditionally hand-stripped or clipped a few times a year. Keep the beard clean after meals.

## Health

A generally sturdy breed with a median lifespan of around 13 years. Hip dysplasia and eye problems can occur, so look for breeders who health-test their breeding stock.
