A small but powerful, muscular terrier from the English Midlands, famed for its courage and devotion to people. A comical, affectionate family dog that needs firm, early socialisation.

## Overview

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a compact, muscular dog with a broad head and a famously cheerful expression. It is smaller than many people expect but very strong for its size.

It is known for being deeply attached to its family and especially tolerant of children.

## History

The breed comes from nineteenth-century bull and terrier crosses, made from bulldogs and terriers in the Staffordshire and Birmingham area. These dogs were used in fighting after blood sports such as bull-baiting were banned in 1835.

Breeders later refined the type for show, and the Kennel Club recognised it in 1935. The AKC followed in 1974.

## Appearance

A smooth-coated, well-balanced dog with a broad skull, short muzzle, strong jaws and a deep chest. The ears are small and half-pricked or rose, and the tail is low-set and tapering.

It stands roughly 36 to 41 cm tall and weighs 11 to 17 kg.

## Temperament

Courageous, clever and very people-focused, the Staffy is playful and affectionate, with a great sense of fun. It enjoys being part of every family activity.

Some dogs are not comfortable with other dogs, so early, careful socialisation is important. They can be strong-willed, but respond well to positive training.

## Care and exercise

Provide a good daily walk and play sessions, plus chewing toys, as it is a powerful chewer. Grooming needs are minimal.

It does not cope well with heat or with being left alone for long periods, and should be supervised around other animals.

## Health

A generally robust breed. Watch for hereditary cataracts, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, L-2-HGA, hip dysplasia and skin allergies.
