A shaggy collie-type droving dog that worked cattle to London's Smithfield Market; believed extinct in England, though similar dogs are still shown in Tasmania.

## Overview

The Smithfield was a large, strong, shaggy collie-type herding dog used to drive cattle to market in south-eastern England, notably Smithfield Market in London.

It was never recognised by major kennel clubs and is believed extinct, although dogs of a similar type are still kept and shown in Tasmania, Australia.

## History

The Smithfield worked as a droving dog around London's Smithfield meat market, handling cattle through busy streets. It was taken to Australia in colonial times.

Very little was documented about it. It was never recognised by a major kennel club and died out in England, but in Tasmania some farmers and breeders keep similar dogs and show them at Campbell Town.

## Appearance

A big, strong collie-type dog standing about 46 to 53 cm, with floppy ears and long, coarse, shaggy hair on the body, face and legs. Two varieties existed, one naturally bobtailed and one with a longer tail.

Colours include black, grey or red with a white collar, or all white. It differs from the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog.

## Temperament

Friendly, patient and good with children, the Smithfield is a working dog that is happiest with a job or plenty of activity. Given daily exercise, it settles happily at home with the family.

It will announce visitors with a friendly bark and enjoys games such as ball chasing and learning tricks.

## Care and exercise

A working dog, it needs daily exercise and something to do, such as fetch, tricks or herding. Without it, it may become restless.

The long shaggy coat should be brushed regularly to prevent mats.
