The wire-coated Italian scenthound, a tireless hare hunter with sighthound lines and a loud voice. It is increasingly kept as a companion dog.

## Overview

The Segugio Italiano a Pelo Forte is the rough-haired of the two Segugio Italiano types. It is a medium-sized Italian scenthound, traditionally used on hare and also on boar.

It hunts alone, in small groups or in packs, and has remarkable stamina. In this century it is increasingly kept as a companion.

## History

The origins are unknown but believed ancient. Roman statues show Diana the Huntress with similar hounds, and such dogs were used in grand hunts during the Renaissance.

A breed club formed in 1920, but the breed nearly vanished during the war. A new society in 1947 revived it, and the FCI fully accepted the rough-haired type in 1956. It is genetically almost the same as the smooth-haired Segugio.

## Appearance

Medium-sized and nearly square, males stand 52 to 60 cm and weigh 20 to 28 kg, with females slightly smaller. The legs are long, the loins tucked up and the back slightly arched, a sighthound look.

The head is that of a scenthound with low-set ears and a long, tapering muzzle. The coat is coarse and rough, no more than 5 cm long, in fawn or black-and-tan.

## Temperament

On a scent trail it shows single-minded dedication, and it bays loudly while pursuing game. It can stay in the field up to twelve hours without a break.

At home it is generally affectionate and can be a pleasant companion when its need for exercise is met.

## Care and exercise

This hound needs lots of daily exercise and should be kept in a secure area, as it will follow a scent regardless of calls. It is vocal and needs plenty of activity.

The wiry coat needs only weekly brushing. Check the drop ears routinely.
