It has long been used in mountain country for game such as wild boar, hare, bear, wolf and deer.\n\nIt is a pure working breed, gentle at home but tireless and brave on a trail.","history":"Iberian scenthounds are described in medieval hunting books, including the 14th-century Libro de la Montería of Alfonso XI, and in later Spanish treatises. They were used mainly for bear and boar and to track wounded game.\n\nAs firearms spread and big game declined, hunters also turned the hounds to hare. Boar numbers have since recovered, and the breed has returned to boar hunting under a fixed standard dating from 1982.","appearance":"A medium-sized dog with a body longer than tall. Males reach about 52 to 57 cm and females 48 to 53 cm. The very long ears can twirl slightly, the eyes are amber with a solemn expression, and the tail tapers like a whip.\n\nThe coat is short, smooth and glossy, white with lemon, orange or red-brown patches.","personality":"Affectionate, calm and amenable at home, yet independent and relentless when tracking. It was bred to hunt alone or with one or two companions, so it is not a typical pack hound.","care":"It suits an active family in a rural home with space and plenty of walks. Its loud bay may not suit close neighbours. The short coat needs only light brushing, and the long ears should be checked and kept clean."},"recognition":{"fci_number":204,"fci_standard_url":"https://www.fci.be/en/nomenclature/204.html","akc_url":null},"sources":{"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabueso_Espa%C3%B1ol","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q39126","wikipedia_revision":1356526412},"profile":{"written_by":"AI model (Claude Sonnet) from the sources above","written_at":"2026-10-15T13:59:38Z"}}}
