It is quick, alert and energetic, a bit like a terrier.\n\nIt is intelligent and easy to train, but it loves to bark and needs plenty of activity.","history":"The Pumi developed in the 17th and 18th centuries from Puli crossed with German and French herding dogs and terriers. It was first named in 1815 and separated from the Puli with its own standard in 1921.\n\nThe FCI approved the standard in 1935. War cut numbers, but the breed recovered and Hungary named it a national breed in 2016.","appearance":"A square, light-bodied dog with a long narrow head. Males are 41 to 47 cm tall and 10 to 15 kg; females are 38 to 44 cm and 8 to 13 kg. The coat is curly and medium length, in grey, black, white or fawn.","personality":"Bold, playful and protective of its family, the Pumi keeps a clownish streak into adulthood. It barks readily and may try to herd people, so early socialisation matters.","care":"It needs daily exercise and mental work such as agility or obedience. Comb the coat every few weeks and trim every two to four months to prevent matting.","health":"Patellar luxation and hip dysplasia are the known issues. Responsible breeders also test for degenerative myelopathy and primary lens luxation."},"recognition":{"fci_number":56,"fci_standard_url":"https://www.fci.be/en/nomenclature/56.html","akc_url":"https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/pumi/"},"sources":{"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumi_dog","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q38919","wikipedia_revision":1376672893},"profile":{"written_by":"AI model (Claude Sonnet) from the sources above","written_at":"2026-10-15T13:59:38Z"}}}
