It was developed to hunt in harsh conditions and became a favourite of the Polish nobility.\n\nAway from the hunt it is a calm, affectionate and loyal companion that settles easily into new surroundings.","history":"The breed was first described in 1779 by Krzysztof Kluk. It is thought to descend from St Hubert Hounds brought to Poland in the Middle Ages and crossed with local hounds.\n\nThe Second World War nearly wiped the breed out. Revival efforts produced a lighter type and a heavier type, and the heavier one was recognised by the FCI in 1966.","appearance":"A sleek but strongly boned dog, standing 55 to 65 cm tall. Males weigh about 25 to 32 kg and females 20 to 26 kg. The thick double coat is black on top with brown markings beneath, and it sheds water well.","personality":"Intelligent, easy to train and calm at home, the Polish Hound is affectionate and very loyal. It gets on well with other dogs and can be protective of its home. It matures slowly and adapts quickly to new places.","care":"This is an active hunting breed that needs good daily exercise and room to roam. Brushing once a week is enough for the coat. Early training and socialisation help it become a well-mannered family dog."},"recognition":{"fci_number":52,"fci_standard_url":"https://www.fci.be/en/nomenclature/52.html","akc_url":null},"sources":{"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_Hound","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q38217","wikipedia_revision":1374139907},"profile":{"written_by":"AI model (Claude Sonnet) from the sources above","written_at":"2026-10-15T13:59:38Z"}}}
