It was created to hunt wolves in packs and is known for its speed, endurance, scenting ability and melodious voice.\n\nToday packs still hunt boar and deer in the French tradition of grand venery.","history":"The breed descends from twelve English Staghounds given to the Dauphin of France in 1692. Some offspring went to the Marquis de Larrye, who crossed them with local hounds to create tricoloured wolf hunters.\n\nThe Revolution, a rabies outbreak in 1842 and the World Wars nearly ended the breed, and English Foxhounds were used to rebuild it. It also helped create the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore and Chien Français Tricolore.","appearance":"A refined, athletic hound with sighthound features, looking like a mix of foxhound and greyhound. It stands 60 to 72 cm and weighs about 20.5 to 30.5 kg, with a flat skull, long narrow muzzle, long legs and a long tail. The short coat is usually tricolour.","personality":"Not shy, but more aloof than many hounds, and it does not adapt well away from a pack. It is driven and tireless when hunting.","care":"Not suited to a typical pet home: it needs a great deal of exercise, space and the company of other hounds. The short coat needs minimal grooming."},"recognition":{"fci_number":24,"fci_standard_url":"https://www.fci.be/en/nomenclature/24.html","akc_url":null},"sources":{"wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poitevin_%28dog_breed%29","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q38185","wikipedia_revision":1341567695},"profile":{"written_by":"AI model (Claude Sonnet) from the sources above","written_at":"2026-10-15T13:59:38Z"}}}
