The Plott Hound is a brindle scent hound bred in the mountains of North Carolina to hunt bears. It descends from German boarhounds rather than from foxhounds and is North Carolina's state dog.

## Overview

The Plott Hound is a strongly built, athletic scent hound originally bred for hunting bears. It is known for stamina, courage and a striking brindle coat.

It is the state dog of North Carolina and one of the few breeds that originated in that state. It is also one of the coonhound breeds that does not trace to the foxhound.

## History

The breed is named for the Plott family. Johannes George Plott emigrated from Germany to North Carolina around 1750, bringing a few boar and bear hounds known for stamina and gameness. His son Henry developed the strain in the western mountains.

The family kept the line closely pure. The United Kennel Club registered the breed in 1946, and the American Kennel Club recognised it in 2006.

## Appearance

A moderate, muscular hound with an athletic, agile build and no loose skin. Males stand about 51 to 64 cm and weigh 23 to 27 kg, females somewhat less. The coat is fine to medium, short or medium in length, smooth and glossy, and always brindled.

## Temperament

Bold, determined and loyal, the Plott is intense when hunting and generally affectionate at home. It is intelligent and independent, with a strong nose that can lead it off on a trail.

## Care and exercise

It needs plenty of vigorous daily exercise and a secure fence, since it will follow scents. Early training and socialisation are helpful. The short coat needs only occasional brushing.
