An extinct Scottish terrier with a long, silky blue-and-tan coat, bred as a show and pet version of the Skye Terrier. It was the forerunner of the Yorkshire Terrier.

## Overview

The Paisley Terrier, also called the Clydesdale Terrier, was a small Scottish dog developed mostly for show and companionship. It looked like a short-backed Skye Terrier with a flowing, silky coat.

The breed has died out, but its blood lives on through the Yorkshire Terrier and several other small breeds.

## History

Fanciers in and around Paisley and the Clyde Valley selected short-backed Skye Terriers with long, soft coats until they bred reasonably true. The Kennel Club recognised it as a Skye variety in 1888, but entries at shows were few.

Because long coat won prizes, the type drifted away from working ability, and Skye breeders objected to showing it alongside their dogs. Interest faded and by 1918 it was uncommon.

## Appearance

About half the weight of a modern Skye Terrier at roughly 7 kg, with a shorter back. It had a profuse, silky coat of blue and tan, with lavish feathering on the ears.

Show dogs were stood on boxes so the full length of the coat could be admired.

## Temperament

Mainly a pet, the Paisley was described in 1894 as an excellent house dog, more substantial than a toy. It could still kill rats, but it was kept chiefly for company.

## Care and exercise

The long silky coat needed a great deal of grooming, which made the breed less practical for many homes. Show dogs had their hair tied back and their feet covered to protect it.
