A large black Chinese working dog, officially called Heilang Quan, developed from German Shepherds and northern Chinese dogs. It serves in police, search and rescue, guard and detection work.

## Overview

The Mojee, officially the Heilang Quan, is a large, short-coated black working dog from northern China. It is used for police, military, detection, search and rescue, and guard duties, and can also be a companion.

It is recognised in China as a registered working dog breed.

## History

The breed is said to have originated in northern China in the nineteenth century. It was formed by crossing German Shepherds with the native tugou of northern China, with wolf blood also reported in its background.

In 2011 the China Working Dog Management Association tested its obedience and retrieving drive and granted it working breed registration with chip implantation. In 2013 it was tested at several police dog bases and recognised by the China National Police Dog Base.

## Appearance

The Mojee is a large working dog with a short black coat and erect ears. Some dogs show a little white on the chest, regarded as a throwback.

It is powerfully built, much like a shepherd-type working dog.

## Temperament

It is a capable, versatile worker with strong drive and obedience, which is why it has been tested for police and security tasks. It typically bonds closely with its handler.

It needs experienced handling and purposeful activity.

## Care and exercise

This is a working dog that needs substantial daily exercise, training and a job or structured activity. Early socialisation is important for a dog of its size and strength.

The short coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing.
