- **Origin:** Spain
- **Temperament:** Hardy, Keen, Lively, Loyal

A short-legged Andalusian hunting dog derived from the medium-sized Andalusian Hound, used on rabbit and feathered game and for retrieving ducks. It is rare and considered vulnerable in Spain.

## Overview

The Maneto is a hunting dog from Andalusia in southern Spain, bred down from the medium-sized Andalusian Hound. Its legs are short relative to its body, and it has triangular, blunt ears.

It is used on rabbits, partridge and quail and to bring ducks back from the water. The Real Sociedad Canina de España recognises it by this name.

## History

The Maneto came from the medium-sized Andalusian Hound and has long been a working dog of the Andalusian countryside. Its name comes from a Spanish word for a defect in the hands or legs, which refers to its short legs.

In 2026 the Spanish kennel club listed it among sixteen Spanish breeds considered vulnerable.

## Appearance

A compact hound with legs short in proportion to the body and triangular, blunt ears. In general it resembles a smaller, lower-set Andalusian Hound.

## Temperament

A hunting dog by nature, it is keen, tireless and attached to its handler. It is likely to be affable with its family and best suited to an active home.

## Care and exercise

It needs regular exercise and a chance to follow scent. A secure garden is important, and its short coat needs only light grooming. Check the ears and nails regularly.
