The Laizhou Hong is a large, muscular red dog from Shandong, China, shaped by native dogs and German-brought Western breeds. It is calm, loyal and happiest with a real job to do.

## Overview

The Laizhou Hong, or Laizhou Red Dog, is a powerful molosser-type dog from Zhuqiao Town in Laizhou, Shandong Province. Its name simply means red dog of Laizhou, a nod to its striking coat.

It works as a guard, working dog and companion, and is now found across China. It is still rare elsewhere, though it was shown at the 2019 World Dog Show in Shanghai.

## History

The breed took shape in the 19th century, when local enthusiasts crossed native Chinese dogs such as the Xigou and Langqing Quan with Western breeds. Great Danes, German Shepherds and Rottweilers arrived with German expatriates working in China.

Breeders often used the Western dogs as the mother line and native dogs as sires. The result spread widely through China and is recognised by the China Kennel Union, which places it in FCI Group 2.

## Appearance

A large, muscular dog with strong athletic ability. The coat is red, black or reddish brown, sometimes with a black saddle. The ears are usually erect and are not cropped.

Like many Chinese breeds, it often shows black or bluish-black spots on the tongue, and some dogs have black gums.

## Temperament

Calm and loyal, the Laizhou Hong bonds firmly with its family and settles into new surroundings and situations quickly. It has a natural guarding instinct and a steady head.

It is an intelligent, capable dog that needs a job or regular tasks to stay mentally and physically satisfied.

## Care and exercise

Plan for plenty of daily exercise and meaningful activity, such as training, patrol-style games or work. Early socialisation and firm, fair handling suit a dog of this size and guarding background.

The short coat needs only occasional brushing.
