An ancient Balkan livestock guardian dog, named for the Karakachan nomadic shepherds. It is a fearless, territorial protector of flocks, famed as a wolf fighter.

## Overview

The Karakachan dog is a traditional mountain livestock guardian from the Balkans, closely tied to Bulgaria. It is prized for its intelligence, courage and devotion to the flock it lives with.

Today it works mainly as a flock and property guardian, with the largest working populations in Bulgaria and the United States. It is a serious working dog and not an easy choice for a typical household.

## History

Its ancestors are thought to go back to the third millennium BC, perhaps to the dogs of the Thracians. The breed takes its name from the Karakachans, nomadic shepherds who kept some of Europe's oldest livestock breeds, including the Karakachan sheep and horse.

The breed nearly vanished but was kept alive by mountain shepherds in Bulgaria. It was also used as a border guard dog. Research and standardisation began in the 1970s, a standard was written in 1991, and it was officially recognised as a Bulgarian native breed in 2005.

## Appearance

A large, powerful, sturdily built dog with a broad head, drop ears and a thick, weather-resistant coat that protects it in mountain climates. Size varies somewhat between working lines.

Colours are typically bold, often white or pied with darker patches, and many carry dark masks. The overall look is of a strong, athletic guardian rather than a heavy, show-type giant.

## Temperament

The Karakachan is strictly territorial and treats its flock as its home wherever it goes. It is calm in ordinary circumstances but becomes seriously assertive if the flock or property is threatened.

It is intelligent and independent, and thinks for itself while working. Breeders have been working towards dogs that are less aggressive toward people while remaining excellent guards against predators.

## Care and exercise

This dog needs space, a job and an experienced owner. It does best living with livestock or on a large, securely fenced property rather than in a town.

Early socialisation and firm, fair handling are essential. Brushing is only needed seasonally, when the thick coat is shed.
