The Istrian Coarse-haired Hound is a rugged Croatian scenthound with a weatherproof wiry coat. It is still kept mostly as a hunting dog and can be willful and challenging to train.

## Overview

The Istrian Coarse-haired Hound is a rough-coated scenthound from Croatia that remains mainly a working hunting dog rather than a household pet. Because performance matters more than looks, individuals vary quite a lot in size.

It is hardy and determined in the field, with a wiry coat built for rough country and bad weather.

## History

Despite the name, the breed took shape across a wider area that includes Istria, the Croatian Littoral, Dalmatia, Gorski Kotar and Lika. It appeared at a dog show in Vienna as early as 1866.

Its origin was disputed from the 1960s, with both Croatia and Slovenia laying claim. In 2003 the FCI recognised Croatia as the country of origin.

## Appearance

Size varies with working lines, from about 43 to 60 cm at the withers and roughly 12 to 27 kg. The coat is wiry and weather resistant, with a topcoat of about 5 to 8 cm over a woolly undercoat.

The colour is white with yellow or orange markings, usually on the ears. The ears are broad and hang flat, and the long tail curves upward and inward.

## Temperament

Bred for hunting rather than companionship, this hound is independent and willful, which makes it harder to train than many breeds. It is keen, brave and persistent on a trail.

With its family it can be loyal, but it suits experienced owners who understand scenthounds.

## Care and exercise

It needs plenty of exercise and the chance to use its nose. Consistent, patient training and early socialisation help manage its stubborn streak.

The wiry coat benefits from regular brushing and occasional hand stripping. Keep it securely fenced, as it may follow a scent and wander.
