The Hmong bobtail is a naturally short-tailed spitz from northern Vietnam, one of the country's Four Great National Dogs, used for hunting, herding, guarding and finding routes in mountain terrain.

## Overview

The Hmong bobtail dog is an ancient, medium-sized spitz from the mountains of northern Vietnam. It is one of Vietnam's Four Great National Dogs and is used by the Hmong people for hunting, herding and guarding.

Today it also serves as a border police and military dog. It is recognised by the Vietnam Kennel Association but not by the FCI.

## History

Much of its history is uncertain. It is thought to descend from natural bobtail dogs of southern China that travelled with the Hmong people into Vietnam, where they may have been crossed with native jackals. Hmong legend places their origin near the Yellow River.

After persecution in China in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many Hmong fled to northern Vietnam's mountains, bringing their dogs. The breed is found in provinces such as Hà Giang, Tuyên Quang, Lào Cai and Yên Bái. A breed club was founded in the United States in 2023.

## Appearance

A square, muscular, medium-sized dog with a short, hard double coat and no feathering. The ears are usually upright.

It is a natural bobtail with no docking. Tails range from absent to full length, with the typical standard being about 3 to 15 cm.

## Temperament

Highly intelligent, the Hmong bobtail is prized for guiding owners along complex mountain routes. It is loyal and friendly with its family, but aloof with strangers and protective of its territory.

## Care and exercise

A working breed that does best with an active life, space and a job to do. It needs daily exercise, mental stimulation and early socialisation.

The short coat needs only occasional brushing. It copes well with extreme temperatures.

## Health

The breed is known for excellent health and resistance to disease and temperature extremes. A lifespan of 15 to 20 years is often reported.
