## Overview

The Gull Terrier is a rare breed from the Punjab region of Pakistan and India. It is a muscular, broad-chested, medium-sized dog with a short smooth coat and erect ears.

It descends from Bull Terriers brought to the subcontinent and crossed with local dogs.

## History

During the British Raj, Bull Terriers were introduced to the northwest of the Indian subcontinent and became popular. They were crossed with local breeds such as the Bully Kutta to form the Gull Terrier.

The dogs were originally used in blood sports. Once these were banned they were used mostly as guard dogs. Some breeders crossed them further to produce the Gull Dong.

## Appearance

A tall, broad-chested, muscular, medium-sized dog with a long muzzle and large, erect ears. The coat is short and smooth, similar to that of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and normally white, sometimes with dark markings on face and body.

## Temperament

This is a protective dog, wary of strangers and attached to its owners and territory. It is described as highly trainable but needs confident, experienced handling and good socialisation.

## Care and exercise

It needs a firm, experienced owner, secure fencing, daily exercise and early socialisation. The short coat is easy to care for. Check local laws, since it is restricted in some places.
